Port Pegasus
Port Pegasus, Stewart Island Place Names
Pikihatiti ..... Not known, although perhaps for
"titi" read "muttonbird
Port South East .... In 1804 the
sealer "Honduras Packet" visited Stewart Island, and while
in Port Pegasus the rough chart Owen Folger Smith drew identifies a
number of places.
Port Somes .... Joseph Somes was the deputy Governor of the
first New Zealand Company. I don't know just who named Port Somes,
but doubtless someone trying to gain favour.
Port Pegasus .... In 1809 the vessel "Pegasus"
Captn
Chase, put into Port Pegasus. This magnificent harbour was charted
by William Stewart, first mate. And it was this chart, first
published in the "Oriental Navigator" in 1816, that lead to the
naming of "Stewart Island"
Sadly many of the names from that chart have been moved or changed.
