Red Crowned Parakeet

Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae
Yellow Crowned Parakeet are somewhat smaller than their red
crowned cousins and far less common on Ulva and Stewart
Island. Their habits seem quite similar, and we do from time
to time see them socialising
Visually the only difference is the yellow upper crown, as
the red eye bar and lower crown is red. So the
bird must be seen front on to distinguish from Red Crowned.
Although when seen together the yellow is markedly smaller.

We call this call the "giggle" and birds will make
it "solo" or when in a group, at rest or flying |
