Grey Warbler
Riroriro
Gerygone igata
Small and darkish grey, tinged with olive especially towards
the tail. Throat flanks and breast lighter grey, underneath
white.
On Ulva more often heard than seen, it's trilling call very
common. However being small, grey and often feeding on
insects high up in the canopy it can be difficult to spot.
But it is common around the village and is often easier seen
in trees quite close to houses
The grey warbler is the preferred host for shining cuckoo,
who will lay their eggs with the warblers second clutch.
I've never seen this fostering, but as the cuckoo fledgling
is several times larger than it's unwitting foster parent it
must be an odd looking relationship to say the least, as the
photo above illustrates.
I've read that the cuckoo imposter can imitate the warbler
chicks feeding demand call which must further cement the
"bond"
For all that Warblers are one of New Zealand most successful
natives at integrating into the modern world I have no video
clips.
