Salvins Mollymawk
Thalassarche salvini
Perhaps the oddest sighting I ever had was a few years ago
early one morning while travelling up the Freshwater River
in the zodiac I came across one paddling determedly
downstream. It had only a couple of miles of river to go to
the inlet. I can only suppose it became dis-orientated in
the dark and landed on the first available water.
I am often asked just how does one distinguish between
Albatross and Mollymawks. The easiest way is to look at the
upper wing and body surfaces. Albatross have a totally white
body, so the dark on the upper wing is broken by the body,
whereas the Molly the upper body is black, thus presenting
unbroken black from wingtip to wingtip.
