Pied Shag
Karuhiruhi
Phalacrocorax various
Pied shags are seen all around Ulva Island and nest at
several locations around the shore. Tree nesters as seen
above, we often refer to them as "Tree Penguins" which gets
the un-initiated quite excited at times. Somewhat larger
than Stewart Island Shags they lack the white shoulder
stripe and also have black, rather than pink feet. A shag
colony is the kiss of death to any tree as their droppings
are very strong.
Young seem to appear in the nest virtually at any time of
the year
One of the issues of tree nesting is that they suffer
occasionally fatal accidents which seems to result with a
broken neck when colliding with a forked branch.
