Blue (Spotted) shag
Parekareka
Stictocarbo puncatus
By far the smallest shag seen at Ulva "Spots" are really
quite handsome, especially in breeding plumage when
they develop an iridescent green eye patch behind the beak.
This is complimented by an erect crest.
When I was fishing there were several who would come when
called, while I was cleaning fish. And who would take small
fillets directly from my hand but would not take offal....
very picky shags....
There is usually a small colony nesting on Goat Island in
Sydney Cove and also on Tamahau at the West End. They
seem to move nesting colonies every few years.
Size 730 mm

Nesting.
Nests are generally in quite cliffy areas, and are
just a collection of twigs often in quite precarious
positions |
