Black Billed Gull
Chroicocephalus bulleri
(formally Larus bulleri)
Only very occasionally do we see Black Billed Gulls around
Ulva, as they only straggle to Stewart Island, being more a
bird of inland rivers, with large (though decreasing)
numbers nesting on Southland rivers. And occasionally on
shingle beaches.
Superficially similar to their red billed cousins the bill
colours of the adults is a dead giveaway. The juvenile black
bills have a pale beak and lack the brown wing blotches.
Size 280 mm
