Both Sails Ashore & Kowhai Lane have extensive libraries of local interest reference books and DVD's. And we have used these to assist with the various information pages we have on this web site. The lists below are designed to reflect the four main interest streams.

Many are out of print, but will be available in good second hand book shops

This web site also draws on 40 odd years of Island life and on many many fascinating hours spent talking with "old Islanders". Many of whom are now sadly gone. Their memories and stories gave substance to the magic of Stewart Island

And some of those memories have been given to us in the shape of old books and albums. One we were very grateful to receive was an album of photos and short descriptions put together by one of the New Zealanders who crewed on one of the Norwegian Whaling Expeditions in the 1920's. The "Whaling Base" in Paterson Inlet is a tangible link with that interesting chapter in Island life.
